My friend compared George Orwell to Ayn Rand.

Okay, they both weren’t the best writers and were more concerned with their ideas rather than their style but god damn’t, at least George Orwell had the depth to go beyond A = A nonsense 

I personally thought Orwell was a fantastic writer- not one sentence in 1984 was unnecessary. 

Well of course but nothing of his style really amused me or intrigued me. He laid pretty much all of his ideas out on the surface. The ideas were great and influential, he just could’ve presented them in a more artful manner. 

I retorted that at least when we heard Emmanuel Goldstein talk about the party and reiterate the Trotskyist criticisms of the Soviet Union, it didn’t take 60 fucking pages of ideological ranting. 

Oh, okay, I agree to certain extent about that. The novel is very… gray. But sensibly so, since Oceania is gray, bleak and dreary and we’re reading the book from the point of view of someone in that society.
