How to Listen to Jazz
mills:
Music’s great virtue is its great curse: a listener needs to understand almost nothing of a song’s art, meaning, intent, or contexts to react powerfully to it. The universality of music’s effectiveness is peculiar: people of every conceivable sort have musical preferences they integrate into their sense of identity —they argue about these pseudo-tastes, fight about them, draw moral...

Neruda, I Have Some Questions Too
Can you still call it altruism, if you’re doing it make yourself better? Does “treat others the way you’d like to be treated,” apply if you’re a masochist? What’s more beautiful, the art or the people witnessing it? Can you platonically kiss someone on the lips, or is that just a sly form of cheating? If you take a different path, is the destination really the same? Does anyone who asks a...

Mute and Motion
newtheoryoldlove:
There is a stampede and it is ruining the moment. Apprehension crawls into my stomach, and I feel that something strange is about to happen. A turbid aura surrounds these men and women who walk hand-in-hand with their children, rugged brown feet taking slow and careful steps, causing chaotic quakes on the carpet. In my state these motions apply a dull and slowly mounting...

Before every game, the girls’ basketball team at Kenmore East High School have a disturbing tradition. “The whole team before our game has a ritual of saying 1-2-3 and then the N word,” says Tyra Batts, the only African-American member of her Buffalo-area high school team. “It’s a tradition that’s been going on for years.” When Batts joined the team this year, with...

Lol, yeah, because when you have someone going to a private school and paying $2000 for personal SAT tutoring, it’s definitely eliminating socio-economic group bias.

Irony, Access and the Decline of Good Political...
politicalprof:
One of the remarkable things about watching media members interview politicians these days is just how bad the questions are. The journalist inevitably starts with a softball set up question that allows the candidate to offer some version of their stump speech for an answer. The journalist either follows up with a second softball on the same topic, or moves on. Notably, the more...

HIV+ man sprayed with Lysol at work
James White’s lawyers in Michigan call his case “the worst case of HIV discrimination they’ve ever seen.” It’s hard to believe how much James had to endure:
When James disclosed his HIV status to his boss at a Great Expressions Dental Center — where James worked as an office assistant — James’ boss told everyone in the office that James had...

It Is the Young Who Suffer, Die in America's Wars →
In Iraq, the youngest suffer the most: a third of American deaths have been under 21, and more than half of those were in the lowest ranks:
In a hilltop graveyard overlooking this Stillaguamish River village lies a young soldier killed in the infancy of the Iraq war.
